That night, she dreamed about going to a ball.
However, as with her last dream, it had turned into a nightmare.
She had been at a ball, dancing with Roger. Everything had been as beautiful and glamorous as heâd described and sheâd been in awe, enjoying herself, until the music had ended and then sheâd felt everyone looking at her, pointing and laughing.
Thatâs when sheâd noticed that sheâd been wearing her old threadbare dress that sheâd been wearing when sheâd arrived in England. In her dream it had been in even worse shape, with ugly patches and a ragged, torn hem, and her toes had been grubby, dirty, and sticking out of her shoes.
People had laughed louder and sheâd tried to run, but had been surrounded by people in fancy dress, and couldnât find an escape route no matter how hard she tired.
Thatâs when sheâd awoken, and hadnât been able to fall back to sleep.
As she lay there, staring at the ceiling, she couldnât recall a time when a dream had been so vivid. She hadnât needed confirmation that she didnât belong in England, in this world of nobility, wealth and luxury, but, nonetheless, her dream provided that.
Everything else proved that, too. Even though she loved spending time in the growing room, loved the plants, the soil, the warmth and brightness of the sun shining through the glass, she didnât fit there, either.
It was an adventure, like Suzanne claimed, but she didnât have time for adventures. She had to create a plan that would get her and Abigail back to America. A plan that included making the money she would need in order to return to Virginia and rebuild the farm.
Though she would never have wished for Alice to be injured, taking over the running of the household could provide information that she could put to use. Not until after Alice healed and Annabelle returned, but after that, she could find a job as a housekeeper in order to earn the money she needed.
By the following morning, Clara was convinced that her dream last night not only confirmed a plan was needed, but it also created an urgency in her to put it in place as soon as possible. She couldnât keep dreaming about Roger. That could tarnish Markâs memory, the love theyâd shared, and she could never let that happen.
âExcuse me, maâam,â Aaron said from the doorway of the growing room that led to the house. âThe pedlar is here. Mrs Mills said that you would see to him.â
âOh, yes, of course.â Clara glanced out the window to check on Abigail and Bertha as she removed the gloves that had been provided for her use and set them on the table. âThank you, Aaron.â
He gave a slight bow. âI will accompany you and carry the purchases.â
She considered telling him that wasnât necessary. The only thing on her list to purchase was tea and she was sure she could carry that by herself, but had already learned that it was part of his duties.
